María & Connor

Nos conocimos por una razón muy práctica: Connor quería aprender español y María quería perfeccionar su inglés. Comenzamos a escribirnos desde el primer día para practicar; al tercero, el idioma era lo de menos.

Nuestro primer encuentro en persona fue en Barranquilla. Ambos llegamos llenos de nervios, pero bastaron diez minutos para que la confianza fuera total. De allí continuamos hacia Cartagena, Medellín y Bogotá. En ese primer viaje descubrimos dos cosas fundamentales: que viajando juntos nos entendemos sin necesidad de palabras, y que compartíamos la misma visión sobre la fe, la familia y el futuro que queríamos construir.

A Buenos Aires llegamos por Connor. Necesitaba realizar un intercambio universitario para graduarse y eligió Argentina, así que nos vinimos los dos. Tiempo después vivimos unos meses en Medellín, seguidos de una etapa en la que Connor debió regresar a Estados Unidos para trabajar y ahorrar. Fueron meses de llamadas a deshora y de ir tachando días en el calendario.

Decidimos volver a Buenos Aires y aquí fijamos nuestro hogar. Hace más de un año y medio que esta ciudad es nuestra base, aunque siempre la usamos como punto de partida: Colonia del Sacramento cruzando el río, el Eje Cafetero, Mendoza, Bariloche y las Cataratas del Iguazú, tanto del lado argentino como del brasileño. Nos encanta llegar a un nuevo lugar sin un itinerario estricto.

Sin embargo, de todos los viajes, el que transformó nuestras vidas fue Ushuaia. Connor eligió el punto más austral del planeta para hacerme la pregunta. No había nadie a nuestro alrededor: solo nosotros dos, el viento del sur y el atardecer en el horizonte. Con mucho frío y el corazón latiendo a mil, María dijo que sí. Ahora, solo nos falta dar este paso frente a ustedes.

We met for a fairly practical reason: Connor wanted to learn Spanish, and María wanted to learn English. We wrote to each other on the first day to practice. By the third day, we weren’t practicing anything.

The first time we met in person was in Barranquilla, Colombia. We both showed up nervous. That wore off quickly. From there we traveled to Cartagena, Medellín, and Bogotá, and on that trip we learned two things: we understand each other without talking, and we think the same way about faith, family, and the life we want to build together.

Buenos Aires, Argentina happened because of Connor. He still needed a university exchange to graduate, and he chose Argentina, which also gave us a place to spend more time together. After that came a few months in Medellín, and then a stretch when Connor went back to the States on his own to work and save some money. Those were months of calls at odd hours and crossing days off the calendar.

When that stretch ended, we came back to Buenos Aires, and this time we stayed. It has been home for more than a year and a half, though we mostly use it as a starting point. We have traveled to Colonia del Sacramento across the river, the coffee region in Colombia, Mendoza, Bariloche, and the Iguazú Falls from both sides, Argentine and Brazilian. We like arriving somewhere without quite knowing what we will do. Always an adventure!

Of all those trips, the one that changed everything was Ushuaia. Connor picked the furthest south you can go to ask the question. There was no one else around, just the two of us and the sunset. It was cold and it was windy, and María said yes. All that is left is taking our vows in front of family and friends.
